Outdoor Dog Beds

Outdoor dog beds need to be a little tougher and resistant to weather. Depending on whether your outdoor dog bed will be under cover or totally exposed makes a big difference in what type of construction and materials are necessary.

Outdoor dog beds come in all shapes, styles, and sizes. Depending on the season or weather conditions, you may want to combine different dog bed features to adjust for each climate. We have two dogs and one loves to curl up in any of his dog beds and the other really doesn't. Plus both of our dogs sleep inside at night so that makes a difference too in our selection of any dog bed.

Here's a basic list of possible considerations for choosing the best outdoor dog bed

  • Does your dog live outside fulltime?

  • Will the dog bed be under cover or in a dog house?

  • What type of weather and temperatures are common in your area?

  • The size and weight of your dog

If your dog spends most of his time outside then you probably have some type of shelter or dog house. You should still get a waterproof dog bed that you can easily clean by hosing off or has a removable cover that can be machine washed. And if in a northern or colder area you might want to get an elevated dog bed and put an additional pad or some type of insulated covering too. You can then remove the pad for the warmer months.

If your dog sleeps inside at night but spends his days outside the same elevated bed with a good pad should work too. Our dogs love being outside 90% of the time, especially if we aren't around so we generally let them out when we leave. They both have outdoor dog beds on our deck which does have a roof over half of it. They like the bean bag style of dog bed and both of ours have a waterproof cover material so we just hose them off every once in a while. We also shake them out and turn them frequently to keep the wear even and the beans moved around.

On the elevated dog beds I happen to prefer the Coolaroo dog bed models. They are very reasonably priced and provide great support for any size dog. They are also very durable and our neighbor's have lasted for years. You can learn more about them here: Durable Dog Beds. Our neighbor has an older Labrador that has arthritis and he has a Coolaroo and memory foam pad that is easy for his dog to get on and off and gives him a comfortable place to sleep outside.

Different Types of Dog Pads: If you go the elevated dog bed route with a pad, there are many choices as far as the material and type. There are orthopedic foam pads, bean bag types, down filled models, and even mattress types very similar to human ones. The most important aspect of any pad is being able to wash it easily. Waterproof is always good too but in a pinch you can spray any material with one of the popular silicone sprays to make it waterproof.

Another important element is to make sure your dog has room on the dog bed to stretch out. In cool weather they might curl up but in warmer weather they also like to stretch out. You can measure your dog from tail to nose and that usually works for a minimum proper size. Make sure you allow for weight issues if you have a large or well fed dog. And if you have a small dog or one that suffers from arthritis make sure that the outdoor dog bed is low enough for easy access.

The elevated dog bed and pad can be found for $50 to $75 depending on the size of your dog. Our bean bag style cost about $50 for the big one (for a Border Collie who is about 40 lbs) to $35 for the smaller dog (Yorkshire and Pomeranian mix who is about 6 lbs). If you get a specialized pad like memory foam or down feathers the price can go much higher.

Any outdoor dog beds should be able to stand up well against adverse weather, be large enough for your dog, and provide a soft, warm, and dry place. Protection from the wind and elements is always a good thing. Durability and easy clean up are important too. .
