Most large dog breeds are well over 75 lbs and at least 25" at the shoulder. Finding them a large enough dog bed can be tough but necessary, especially if you want your couch or own bed back. Many of the normal pet retail outlets may not offer the extra large dog bed models or have to special order. Although the larger dog breeds are popular the higher costs and slower sales may deter many smaller local retailers from stocking these size beds. There probably will be a lot better selection of these larger size dog beds online than locally. The larger dog beds need to have more support and certainly take more materials to build. There are a few popular styles, one is similar to a flat bean bag, another is like a miniature couch, and then there's the one that resembles a life raft. Due to the size of the dog their built for, most range in size from 45" to 55" in length or diameter if round. Which means you better have space for that big of a dog bed., For the lower end extra large dog beds the prices start around $75 and if they have special filling or unique design you can double that easy. Just like with any dog bed it's important to be able to remove the cover to clean and the filling should be able to handle the weight of the dog and still maintain some ability to support the dog. Some of the high end models come with memory foam and other material that provides better support. Check for quality workmanship and materials: A good thing to check for on any dog bed is the seams. The stitching, the type of thread, and any zippers can show how well the dog bed was manufactured. The material should be washable and hold it's shape and size. Most have tags that tell the fabric and give care instructions. Not sure about you but I don't want to dry clean my dog bed cover if possible. Check the warranty: Most extra large dog beds have some type of warranty. Check both the headlines and the small print as there may be disclaimers. Buy from some source that will be there in case you need to make a claim on the warranty if necessary. Also make sure that the limits or specifics are within the ability to prove. Reasonable wear and tear is tough to dispute. Make sure you do some checking around for different manufacturers and sources since prices can vary considerably on extra large dog beds due to the materials and size. And you might want to measure your dog just in case so you make sure that the dog bed is big enough.. |
